DEATH'S APPRENTICE 2

Next time heaven wants to assign a job like this to a mortal, they should choose either a serial killer or an assassin.
This is day 5 of my soul harvesting week. I never knew being death was painful, knowing you're taking souls of the ones, who are just like you. I've killed, I mean I've harvested over 5 million souls with normal death circumstances around the world, and the ones whom committed suicide, were over 1.5 millon. Some were little children, I cried with their parents.
There was one that captured my heart when she asked.

"Mister Death?" Hailey asked.

"Yes, my beloved." I answered.

"Before I fell ill, I use to play in the garden under the rain, can I do that again today?" She asked me with her eyes looking hopeful, I couldn't say no.

"Go ahead little one, play as long as you want. When you're ready we move." I answered her smiling.

"Yay!" She screamed running towards the rain.

She played alone till the rain stopped. Not that she got wet, I know some of you are thinking, she is dead how would she enjoy the rain.

"Mister Death, would you please make sure my dad never cries for too long? I don't want to see him sad ever again." She requested.

"I promise to do my best. Shall we?" I asked.

"Hurray! Let's go." She shrieked.

This was a girl whom was bed-ridden from age 5 to 9, four years of suffering cancer of the blood. Such innocent soul never lived long enough to see things beyond the world that was shown.

After that day, I took a day off. I have just one name on my list and I just want to get this over with. I couldn't bear the guilt of taking people away from the ones who love them. I decided to be snappy about everything, I reduced the life span to make it less painful, but believe me, it never changed a thing.

I wanted to just go with the flow until I met the last person on the list.

It was easy at first, but our encounter was what I would call *STORM WRECK*.

You know the feeling that you're invincible, you're death, you feel there isn't anything in the world that could, you know surpass you.

Imagine if a mortal could see you, then how the hell are you gonna harvest their soul.

Jane Christabel Roberts, 19, United States of America. Oh well! This is the last one, let's get this over with.

I teleported to a house, not that big but you know the comfy type. Took my time to survey the building, well it's nice, checked the time. It say 8 on the dot, let's move in.

The house was kinda quiet, what am I saying, it's meant to be quiet the night already. I head upstairs and check the rooms to find her. I opened the first door I saw, there she was , believe me the picture death has of her never did justice to the girl in front of me.

How am I going to transport such beauty. I look around the room, not making a fuss until.

"Who are you and what are you doing in my room?" Jane asked.

Wait! It's impossible, she can't see me, I look at myself. Look back at her and say

"Are you seeing me?" I asked surprised.

"Am I not meant to?" She replied with a question.

"You are not meant to see me, that's not how this works. I'm just here to." I paused.

I can't tell her I'm death until I've harvested her soul.

"You should leave unless I would call the police." She threatened.

"Bitch please, the police can't do shit to me." I answered so full of myself.

"911, what's your emergency?"

"There is a weird guy in my room, I have no idea who he is ." She began.

Ok! Shit is about to get real. I ran through her door and teleported back to death's home, and started thinking out loud.

"How the hell did she see me? Was that meant to happen? I've heard stories of people seeing death when it's time to go, but I never thought it was possible. How am I gonna do this? I still have to watch her and you know, do the deed.

When I thought this job couldn't get any worse, a mortal whom is meant to be on her way can see me coming. I can could try to watch from afar.

I go back to the house, no one in sight, head to her room, and this time sit and watch. Even in the dark she still looks as beautiful as the daylight. Blonde hair, oval shaped face, small lips that are tempting to devour. She is a light sleeper, I guess I'm gonna be here till day breaks.

It's morning, day 6 of being death's apprentice. Yesterday was crazy believe me, all my years of being death, what am I saying? All those days of being death, I haven't experienced such, she is still sound asleep.

"How did you get in here, again?" Jane asked.

The devil herself has awoken.

"You look more beautiful when angry." I said.

"Excuse me? Who are you? Are you here to kill me?" She asked this time she seemed frightened.

"I'm not here to kill you, well that's a honest truth you know." I began.
"I'm a guide to the after-life." I concluded.

Well that sounds less terrifying.
Then she shocked me.

"Are you Death?" She asked me less terrified.

"What makes you think that I am death?" I asked.

"Uhm, your robe is black and it's not touching the floor, more like you're floating. You ran out of my room last night, I never heard you go down the stairway." She stated.

That's pretty observant for someone who is likely to go anytime soon.

"Aren't you scared?" I asked

"At first I was , but not anymore." She said.

"What do you mean by not anymore? I'm here to take your soul and you're cool about it?" I was shocked.

Can someone please shot this girl on the head, I think she lost her sense. No that would kill her, hit her that could work.

"Not entirely, I've got no reason to live." She stated.

I was quiet for ten seconds and I asked a stupid question.

"*WHAT?*" I screamed.
"What do you mean you've got no reason to live? There has to be something that you could live for? Even if it's stupid to the ears of others." I was ranting.

"You don't sound like Death." She said.

"That's because I'm not I am his apprentice given the job of a mass murderer and a serial killer assassin." Now I was frustrated.
"You were given a life, you may have been a blessing to some people without realising that, you could have help people in ways they had never imagined, you may have done things that could benefit everyone." I said.

"Are you trying to talk me out of dying? Cause it's seems you're giving reasons not to." She replied.

"I don't know, maybe. There has to be something, someone that wants you alive or something." I stated.

"There isn't any because they are all dead. You should know about that, aren't you death, look if you aren't here to kill me, I may just go and jump off a bridge." She threatened.

"Ok, slow down, calm down. Let's talk this over coffee, I know I ruined your life by appearing here, but I didn't have any plan to you know. Go and take a shower I would be downstairs." I said.

She just nodded, she concealed her sobs, and went into the bathroom.

I was downstairs trying to get my thoughts together, now it makes perfect sense, no one came into the room, she was all alone in this house, that's sad. She must have been through a lot, and me being here isn't helping at all.

She came down an hour later all dressed and looking ice cold like a dark princess of the snow.

"You made breakfast?" She asked me with her mouth opened.

"Close your mouth before flies lay eggs there, and yes I did make breakfast." I answered.

We sat by the dining table, this shit was looking awkward, I'm wondering if this is how new couples feel the very first time. I remove the hood from my face.

"Wow! Who knew death is a handsome young man?" She asked.

"Flattery ain't working babe, down to business." I said.

"What's your name and how did you become his apprentice?" She asked me.

"My name is Kelvin. As for the other one, well it's kind of a long story." I began.

"I've got all day, except if I'm dying soon." She stated.

I narrated from the beginning, how I wanted to save a child, who was almost killed by a truck and how I woke up beside death and him telling me I'm his apprentice.

She was laughing at me, why the hell is she laughing.

"Is something funny?" I asked pissed.

"Not exactly, except for the part were he reveals to you how you died." She answered.

"So what's your story?" I asked.

"I don't understand." She answered.

"Like, what makes you want to leave this world, without a backward glance?" I asked with a stern face.

"Life isn't what I thought it was you know, growing up I had a lot of things going well for me until the death of my father, he died when I was 12. My mother never got over it, she died 5 years later when i was 17. Those two years I've lived without them, I found out how humans could be cruel to their own self. You must know about teenage hormones. I had a boyfriend when I was 17, I thought he was the best thing that has ever happened to me. When I visited him, he wanted me to you know, go down on it. I refused, he tried to force me, I screamed hit him in the balls and ran. I filed a report on him, bit he never came close again. So I ask this one question, is there anything in my life, that's worth living for?" She said with tears in her eyes and her lips trembling, her hands were shaking.

"I'm not gonna say I've experienced such, I'm not gonna say that you deserved what you got going on your life because no one does. All I'm trying to say is, give me today to prove to you, how your life could be meaningful, to people you never knew." I requested.

"How are you gonna do that?" She asked.

"I've got my ways." I told her.

"I'm giving you 8 hours to prove your claim. Just eight. After that we would see were it all ends." She said.

"Trust me girl, I need less than that. Have you ever robbed a bank?" I asked.

"No, that's ridiculous how would I even."

I cut her short, we teleported into the bank of America vault. I brought a bag.

"What the fuck are you doing?" She asked
"You could get caught." She said.

"I paused and looked at her and laughed, if there is anyone who would be caught, it would be you. I'm death remember. Besides I've been here before there is camera in this section of the bank." I answered.

"Wait! Why were you here in the first place?" She asked.

"With this power I possess, all the things I've dreamt of doing, I did then in a day, trust this one was topping my list." I said smiling.

"Can I ask a question?" She said.

"You already did just now." I answered.

Oh! Shut up, how are you even death?" She asked.

"Funny enough, that was the same question I asked death and he said - _honestly I don't even know, o just found myself as death and I love my job_. But in my case I don't love the job, just the powers that comes with it." I smiled.

We robbed a bank, stole some cash, it's if 2 million in dollars could be said to be some cash. I asked her what are the things you've always wanted to do. She says.

"Help war infested countries, feed orphanages because I know what it feels like to be one, teach little children. You know, play with them and all." She said.

"I like to hold a child, but when they become more than two, they look like infestation that needs to be gotten rid off." I said.

"That isn't a nice thing to say about them." She was getting pissed.

"I was speaking for me, not you." I stated.

"Whatever. Which one are we doing first?" She asked.

"You like surprises?" I asked her.

"Depends on what kind." She answered.

We teleported to a school, kindergarten to be precise, she requested to teach for a day, and surprisingly she got the job, well she said she was volunteering to the society. There were some kids that could see me, believe me I almost went nuts. After teaching the children, we went to Syria, and then to Libya. We help the UN feed the people there and we spent sometime with them, our next stop was the orphanages around the country, sharing gifts and groceries we bought. And we ended up giving cash donations. Trust me I've never see someone so full of joy, she was happy and feeling fulfilled.

8 hours was up, and I took her to a place I go to for relaxation. We were quiet, I was stroking her hair, she was sleeping on my shoulder, now I know what it is like to be the shoulder someone rest on. I took her home and I was watching her sleep, I went down and prepared dinner for her. While doing that I began asking myself, how am I gonna transport someone whom I've shown what it feels like to be alive?

"Are you ok?" I heard behind me.

"Uhm, yeah I am, you?" I asked Jane.

"I just want to say thank you, for everything." She said.

She walked up to me as hugged me, I've never held anyone for so long, I kissed her in the head, her hair carried the fragrance of lavender. I don't want this to end, I don't even want her to go, I'm not sure I would let her go.

We had dinner and we talked, on, and on, and on, and on, and on, and on, nonstop. We talked into the next day which is meant to be my last day as an apprentice. I'm going to make the hardest decision ever, I don't think I'm going to go through with it. I tried to leave she says.

"Would stay by my side? I've never wanted anyone by my side until you." She said. Even though she was shy about the whole thing. I held her, close to my heart, I've been saying rubbish lately,I don't have a heart. Her breathing was calm, she is a fighter when asleep. If you know what I mean, she pushed me with her legs, down from the bed. I was laughing silently.
There was a song playing on the background.

I'll hold your hand till it goes cold
I'll hold my tears until you go
With all the life that leaves your bones,
It soaks the purpose from my own

Ohhh, ohh, oh
Please don't go

I love you more than you could know
You've got a hole inside my soul
It's like a mountain soaked in snow
It's in the earth the river flows

Ohhh, ohh, oh
Please don't go
Ohhh, ohh, oh
Please don't go

I went downstairs, paced around, thought of different ways to change the fate of everything. Nothing came. I left a note, and I left.

Back in death's domain. I was waiting for him, it didn't take long before he came back and said.

"Boy, what's the hold up? Why haven't you done the last one?" Death asked me.

"I can't do it." I said.

"What do you mean you can't do it? You've been doing it all these while, what changed?" He asked.

"She changed, she isn't sick, not sucidal, why does she have to die?" I wanted to understand how it works.

"I don't choose people who are to leave this world." He said calmly.

"There has to be another way to do things, like I don't know speak with him. She has done nothing to deserve death." I stated.

"You think I don't know that? You think I find it funny? Do you believe I'm happy taking the good ones away? Do you think I'm comfortable watching kids cry about their parents? Or parents for their kids? Do you think I haven't asked them how to change the fate of done people? I've considered all aspects and nothing, nothing came out, of any of them. So when I say nothing can be done, then nothing can be done. I've taken the ones that never deserved to be taken, in the first place. Whenever they tell me it's time, I just do it. I know she is a pure soul that only longed to be loved but never got any, but there is nothing you and I can do about that." Death said with pain and emotions in his voice.

"I'm so sorry, I never knew." I apologized.

"There is nothing to be sorry for, it shows you're a kind hearted person. I guess it's time for you to go, I would do the harvesting myself." He told me.

"Can I see her one last time?" I requested.

"Go ahead, she is still asleep." He said.

I went back to her house and watched her sleep. If only we met under different circumstances, maybe just maybe things wouldn't have to end this way. I kissed her on the head and go back to death.

"Are you ready to go?" He asks me.

"Let's go now, before I change my mind." I answered.

He takes me to heavens gate and said,

"I can honestly say, you're the best apprentice anyone could ask for. You've shown the truth about humanity. But not everything we want, is what we get. The most important ones are what comes first. See ya boy." Death said then he left.

"That's how I spent my time as his apprentice." I told my new friends in heaven.

"Omo, you flex powers, oh!" Lekan said.

"What about Jane? Have you seen her?" Dave asked

"Well, no. I'm not sure she made it here. I don't even know if he has harvested her soul yet. But I believe we would meet again.

Heaven at last, what could possibly go wrong.
